About the Classes: Unique to KYL/D, CHI Awareness Practice is essential to the professional ensemble and its youth programming. CHI Awareness Practice has been cultivated for over 20 years by Artistic Director, Kun-Yang Lin, which focuses on developing the relationship of the moving body to breath, awareness, and mindfulness. These themes of breath, awareness, and mindfulness are brought into all programming at KYL/D, including youth classes.

Aaron Mitchell: Hip Hop 1 and 2

BIO: Born and raised in Philadelphia, Aaron is a Senior at Temple University currently working toward his B.F.A. in dance. A late bloomer, Aaron began his classical training at the age of 19 here at Boyer. He began training in Ballet, Horton, Contemporary, Post-Modern, and Jazz techniques. During his time at Temple, Aaron has worked in many companies, including Eleone Connection, Grace 2 and Philadanco 2. He has won scholarships for every dance intensive he has attended, such as DCNS and Next Generation Dance Conservatory. At 20, Aaron also developed a love for Hip Hop. A versatile mover, Aaron is trained in House, Popping, Locking, and B-boying. He currently is a part of the Hip Hop community and competes in battle events regularly around the East Coast. Aaron has trained with many notable Hip Hop dance legends, including Seku Hero, Kim Holmes, Brian Green, and Kyle and Dinita Clark.
 

HIP HOP 1 & 2 CLASS DESCRIPTION: Driven by infectious dance/lounge/funk rhythms, this class is aerobic, challenging, and most of all, fun! Students learn the fundamental movements of Hip Hop while exploring your freedom of expression through rhythmic sequences and improvisation. All levels welcome! No dance background required. Hip Hop 1 is for Ages 8-10, and Hip Hop 2 is for Ages 14-18.

KYAN NAMAZI: BALLET AND MODERN/JAZZ

BIO: Kyan grew up in Liverpool, England before attending London Contemporary Dance School, graduating in 2015 with his BA in contemporary dance studies. Here he was privileged to perform works by choreographers Kerry Nicholls, James Cousins, James Wilton, Didy Veldmann and Crystal Pite. He has since performed throughout the UK with companies, Avant Garde Dance, James Wilton Dance, Encompass Collective and Lauren Tucker Dance. Kyan moved to the United States in 2016, here he has been excited to perform a revival of 'La Cage aux Folles' and joined SHARP Dance as a guest artist. In 2017, Kyan began working with Kun-Yang Lin/Dancers as an apprentice. Kyan is now a company member. 

BALLET CLASS DESCRIPTION: As the foundation to many forms of dance, this class is designed to teach the fundamentals of ballet technique, while still having fun. Dancers will learn basic steps and positions at the barre and across the floor, which will be combined to simple combinations. This is a beginner class for young individuals, ages 5-7.

MODERN/JAZZ CLASS DESCRIPTION: This class combines techniques of classical ballet and modern dance with current forms of popular dance. Upbeat and rhythmic, Modern/Jazz focuses on dance technique while also exploring creativity and self expression. All levels welcome! No dance background required. This is a class for students ages 11-13.
