Announcing our Spring 2019 Session!

About the Classes: Unique to KYL/D, CHI Awareness Practice is essential to the professional ensemble and its youth programming. CHI Awareness Practice has been cultivated for over 20 years by Artistic Director, Kun-Yang Lin, which focuses on developing the relationship of the moving body to breath, awareness, and mindfulness. These themes of breath, awareness, and mindfulness are brought into all programming at KYL/D, including youth classes.

Frankie Markocki: Jazz Technique Ages 11-15

BIO: A Philadelphia native, Francis Markocki began his training at the age of fifteen. Francis graduate with his BFA in Dance from Temple University in 2016. With his degree, Francis pursued performance opportunities in the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, Inhale Performance Series, Temple University MFA Thesis Concerts and with KYL/D. He is a certified M’singha Wuti instructor in the Umfundalai Dance Technique, for which he studied under its founder Dr. Kariamu Welsh. Francis is a dance teacher, choreographer and private instructor for queer performers in Philadelphia. He joined Kun-Yang Lin/Dancers as an apprentice in 2016 and became a company member in 2017. Frankie also teaches classes through KYL/D's youth education and outreach program, CHI Dance.

JAZZ TECHNIQUE DESCRIPTION: Jazz Technique is a fundamental class for learning basic steps and body coordination for Jazz Dance. The class will consist of standing warm-up, across the floor exercises, body strengthening activities, stretching and phrase work/learning combinations of choreography. The class will also focus on incorporating breath and body awareness into Jazz movement.

Weiwei Ma: Chinese Classical Dance Ages 7-11

BIO: Weiwei Ma is a Chinese dancer, teacher, and choreographer who started professional Chinese dance training at age eleven. She studied choreography at The Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Academy of Arts where she graduated with a BFA degree. Before coming to Philadelphia, Weiwei taught Chinese classical dance and choreography at Beijing Contemporary Music Academy. Weiwei graduated with her MFA degree from Temple University in Philadelphia in 2016. One of her works was selected in 2015 for performances at Boyer College, which she represented at the 2016 ACDFA conference in Brockport, NY. Weiwei has been a member of Kun-Yang Lin/Dancers since 2013 and she currently is the sole female Lead Chinese Dancer at KYL/D.

CHINESE CLASSICAL DANCE DESCRIPTION: The class will strengthen students’ physical coordination and flexibility. We will take the time to learn some elements and movements of Chinese Classical and Folk dance. Students will experience the special aesthetic and movement forms that create the foundation for many types of Chinese Classical and Folk dances. This class is for students ages 7-11.

Barbara Craig: BALLET Ages 5-7

BIO: Barbara Craig was born in Shaker Hts. OH, and began her training with The School of Verlezza Dance and later Cleveland City Dance. Later, she attended Ballet Mets Pre-professional program for one year before dancing with Euoropa Ballett Sankt Poelten in Austria. In 2014 She was invited to return to the states to train and perform with The Pennsylvania Academy of Ballet as an apprentice. Since then, she has danced and performed with many local Philadelphia companies and choreographers, including Bryan Koulman Contemporary Ballet, Nora Gibson Contemporary Ballet and Verb Ballets. Barbara enjoys teaching ballet as well as the GYROKINESIS® and GYROTONIC® methods. She joined Kun-Yang Lin/Dancers as an apprentice in 2017.

BALLET CLASS DESCRIPTION: As the foundation to many forms of dance, this class is designed to teach the fundamentals of ballet technique, while still having fun. Dancers will learn basic steps and positions at the barre and across the floor, which will be combined to simple combinations. This is a beginner class for young individuals, ages 5-7.

Aaron Mitchell: Hip Hop Ages 8-11

BIO: Born and raised in Philadelphia, Aaron is a Senior at Temple University currently working toward his B.F.A. in dance. A late bloomer, Aaron began his classical training at the age of 19 here at Boyer. He began training in Ballet, Horton, Contemporary, Post-Modern, and Jazz techniques. During his time at Temple, Aaron has worked in many companies, including Eleone Connection, Grace 2 and Philadanco 2. He has won scholarships for every dance intensive he has attended, such as DCNS and Next Generation Dance Conservatory. At 20, Aaron also developed a love for Hip Hop. A versatile mover, Aaron is trained in House, Popping, Locking, and B-boying. He currently is a part of the Hip Hop community and competes in battle events regularly around the East Coast. Aaron has trained with many notable Hip Hop dance legends, including Seku Hero, Kim Holmes, Brian Green, and Kyle and Dinita Clark.

HIP HOP 1 & 2 CLASS DESCRIPTION: Driven by infectious dance/lounge/funk rhythms, this class is aerobic, challenging, and most of all, fun! Students learn the fundamental movements of Hip Hop while exploring your freedom of expression through rhythmic sequences and improvisation. All levels welcome! No dance background required. This Hip Hop class is for Ages 8-11.
